We joined on Sunday September, 27th of 2026 with Malkon Marizian to discuss contemporary Armenian Palestinian identity and community struggles in occupied Jerusalem. Armenians have lived in Jerusalem for over a millennium, and the Armenian Quarter of the Old City remains one of the oldest continuous diasporic communities in the world. Many families in modern Jerusalem trace their roots to survivors of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, who found refuge in the city after the massacres and deportations carried out by the Ottoman Empire. In 1948, the Nakba and the creation of Israel brought a second upheaval, as many Palestinian Armenians were displaced across the Arabic-speaking world.
Malkon Marizian is a Palestinian Armenian human rights advocate, psychology professional, and the founder of the Mazat Dance Project. He has worked for years providing psychological support services and arts programming for children in Lebanese, Armenian, Palestinian, and Syrian refugee communties. Drawing on his background in human rights he discussed Palestinian Armenian life and the role of dance in communities experiencing ongoing displacement, and systematically denied the freedom of movement.
