On Sunday, May 10th of 2026 we joined with Zochrot and ADRID to mark the 78th anniversary of the Nakba and learn about current efforts to advance Palestinian return. Israeli police restrictions had recently forced the organizers of the annual March of Return marking the anniversary of the Nakba to cancel the planned commemoration.
Each year on the day Israel celebrates Independence Day, thousands of Palestinian citizens of Israel take part in the annual pilgrimage to the sites of Palestinian villages depopulated in 1948 and participate in the larger March of Return. In 2026 the Association for the Defense of the Rights of the Internally Displaced (ADRID) decided to cancel the planned march rather than comply with police orders to refrain from carrying Palestinian flags and limit participants to 1000.
We spoke with ADRID and Zochrot to discuss the recent police censure and their work to promote historical memory, practically advance the Palestinian right of return, and build a future in which the rights of Palestinian refugees are honored as part of a larger vision of justice, equality, and collective freedom.
