We joined on Sunday, August 9th of 2026 with Dr. Marwan Darweish and Dr. Mahmoud Soliman for a critical conversation exploring the practice, possibility, and limits of unarmed civilian protection (UCP) in Palestine.
Unarmed Civilian Protection in Palestine (Bristol University Press, 2026), their recent book co-authored with Andrew Rigby, draws on first-hand field research to reveal the daily realities of UCP practitioners working to enhance the security of Palestinian communities amid rising dispossession and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank. We were honoured to join with them to learn about their research and the imperatives of solidarity.
*Dr. Mahmoud Soliman is a Visiting Research Fellow in Peace Studies at the Centre for Peace and Security, Coventry University. He is the co-founder of the Popular Struggle Coordination Committee (PSCC), a coordinating body for local popular struggle committees across the West Bank, and organizes direct grassroots support for threatened agricultural communities with Faz3a.
*Dr. Marwan Darweish is an Associate Professor of Peace Studies, formerly at Coventry University, and current visiting scholar at Aberystwyth University. His research focuses on civilian protection in the face of escalating violence in the West Bank. His family is from the Palestinian village of Al-Lajjun and became internally displaced refugees after it was depopulated during the 1948 Nakba.
