PALESTINE - ISRAEL - JORDAN - SINAI

Off the beaten track tours • Visit sites • Meet locals • Discuss Human Rights & Politics

What would it be like to be a Jewish Israeli woman living in the middle of the Palestinian city of Ramallah?

This is the topic of the popular blog written under the pseudonym Umm Forat. Recently she decided to reveal her identity and this week she will speak to our Green Olive community about her unique experiences.

She is Sari Bashi; a human rights lawyer and activist with expertise in international humanitarian law and Israeli policy toward the occupied Palestinian territory. She’s the author of Maqluba: Upside-Down Love (in Hebrew) and the Umm Forat blog.  Sari co-founded Gisha, the leading Israeli human rights group promoting the right to freedom of movement for Palestinians in Gaza, and served as its first executive director. She’s currently working as an advisor to Human Rights Watch.

She is also an Echoing Green Fellow, alongside Green Olive’s own Fred Schlomka.

She will speak about her activism, her work and her family life – she is married to a Palestinian man and has two young children. As one can imagine, speaking Hebrew in the middle of a busy street in downtown Ramallah raises some eyebrows!

She will speak to us by Zoom on Wednesday 13 April, starting at 21.00 (Jerusalem time). Registration is free, and you should pay whatever you felt the webinar was worth at the end. Your contributions support our Collective and Sari’s chosen charity, the Haifa Association, a nonprofit organization in Gaza that helps children with diabetes. You can contribute at this link.
